Anger is one of the influential factors in couples' relationships, and its lack of management has adverse consequences for the family. Therefore, couple therapy interventions are necessary to reduce the destructive effects of anger. This research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of emotion-focused couple therapy based on an Islamic approach on improving anger management among incompatible couples using a quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest design and with a control group and a follow-up phase. The population included all couples referring to the Voice of Liberation Counseling Center in Tehran in 2022-2023, and 30 couples were selected by the convenience sampling as the sample; thus, 30 couples whose anger score was at least 1 standard deviation higher than the average of the anger scale were identified from the population and then randomly placed into two test and control groups. The emotion-focused couple therapy program based on an Islamic approach was implemented in the test group for 10 90-minute sessions. The research data were collected with Spielberger's anger scale and analyzed by the analysis of variance with repeated measures. The results demonstrated a significant difference in the anger management component between pretest and posttest, but the mean of posttest and follow-up was not statistically significant. Therefore, it can be said that couple therapy based on an Islamic approach was effective in improving anger management among incompatible couples and the effects of the treatment on the anger management component were able to maintain their effects until the follow-up phase.
