Objective: The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the prediction of adolescent girls' social adjustment based on mothers' modernism, with personal adjustment serving as a mediating variable.
Method: This applied study employed a non-experimental, descriptive-correlational design. The population consisted of all mothers with adolescent daughters (aged 12-18) in the city of Qom; from this group, 365 participants were selected using the convenience sampling. Data were collected using researcher-made questionnaires assessing mothers' modernism (25 items, α=0.772), adolescent daughters' personal adjustment (9 items, α=0.582), and adolescent daughters' social adjustment (13 items, α=0.772). The data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient, simultaneous multiple regression analysis, and the Baron and Kenny (1986) three-step method, supplemented by the Sobel test.
Results: The results indicated that the attitudinal dimension of mothers' modernism has a significant positive relationship with all components of social adjustment, including social skills (β=0.264), social relationships (β=0.308), family relationships (β=0.209), and social interests (β=0.211) as well as with all components of personal adjustment, including self-efficacy (β=0.218), assertiveness (β=0.236), self-confidence (β=0.262), and self-esteem (β=0.245) (P<0.001). Regarding the behavioral and dispositional dimensions, no significant relationships were found, with the exception of the link between the dispositional dimension and self-confidence (β=0.151, P=0.004). Mediation analysis revealed that personal adjustment plays a role of full mediation in the overall relationship between mothers' modernism and social adjustment (Z=-4.584, P<0.001), and a role of partial mediation regarding the components of social skills (Z=-3.163, P<0.001) and family relationships (Z=-2.376, P<0.05).
Conclusions: The attitudinal dimension of mothers' modernism is the strongest predictor of adolescent girls' personal and social adjustment, with personal adjustment serving as the primary mediating link in this relationship. These findings underscore the importance of considering mothers' beliefs and attitudes when designing educational and counseling interventions aimed at enhancing adolescent girls' adjustment.
