Abstract
This descriptive-documentary study aimed to recognize the concept of male superiority over women through a new reading of the verses 19 and 34 of Surah Nesa; thus, all written scientific sources, especially the books of interpretation from the second century AH to now, were reviewed, and there was no research that examined the subject of this study. According to the results, the how of understanding the important responsibility of male superiority over women in different centuries has created different ideas in the books of interpretation. Analyzing some previous interpreters' views until the thirteenth century A.H. indicates a kind of male domination over women that the misuse of these concepts provides a challenge in couples' relationships, and it is contrary to good behavior. From the fourteenth century, the concepts of male superiority over women have extremely changed; some interpreters' views such as Seyed Ghotb, Allameh Tabatabaei, Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi, Ayatollah Javadi Amoli, etc. based on good behavior in terms of the quality of male superiority over women, while making the concept of superiority flexible, remove the family center from any domineering interpretations and replace it with expressions like service, support, guardianship, protection, and supervision.
